Beyond the Theme Parks: 10 Unforgettable Things to Do in Orlando with Your Family

Beyond the Theme Parks: 10 Unforgettable Things to Do in Orlando with Your Family

Orlando and theme parks go hand in hand, and for good reason — Disney World and Universal Studios are world-class. But if you're planning a family trip to Orlando, you might be surprised by just how much there is to do beyond the parks. In fact, some of our families' most treasured Orlando memories happened outside the park gates.

Here are ten of our favorite things to do in Orlando that don't involve a roller coaster (unless you want them to!).

1. Kennedy Space Center

About 45 minutes from the airport, Kennedy Space Center is a full-day adventure that's worth every minute. Kids who love space and astronauts will be in heaven — and honestly, parents will be too. You can see the actual Space Shuttle Atlantis, meet a real astronaut, and experience the Shuttle Launch Experience simulator. It's educational, awe-inspiring, and a great break from the theme park crowds.

2. Hang-Gliding at Wallaby Ranch

Yes, you read that right — you can go hang-gliding in Orlando! Wallaby Ranch solved the "no mountains" problem by using a small plane to tow you into the air before releasing your hang glider. Kids as young as 3 have done it, making it one of the most unique family thrills in Florida. This is the kind of story your kids will tell their own kids someday.

3. Gatorland

This classic Orlando attraction has thousands of alligators and crocodiles, plus snakes, birds, and a petting zoo. The highlight? Ziplining over the gator swamp — five lines that give you a bird's-eye view of the reptiles below. It's a blast and surprisingly affordable compared to the major parks.

4. Take a Trapeze Class at Orlando Circus School

One of the coolest things you can do in Orlando is take a trapeze class at the Orlando Circus School. The coaches are patient and encouraging, and after the trapeze, kids can try the trampoline with harnesses to learn backflips. It's a one-of-a-kind experience that builds confidence and creates incredible memories.

5. Clear Kayaking at Rock Springs

Paddle through crystal-clear spring water in a transparent kayak surrounded by lush tropical vegetation. Companies like Get Up and Go Kayaking offer guided tours that are perfect for families. The water is spring-fed and stays a refreshing 68 degrees year-round — a wonderful escape from the Florida heat.

6. The Escape Game Orlando

A perfect rainy-day activity (and Orlando gets plenty of summer rain!), The Escape Game offers family-friendly escape rooms with themes like "Playground" that are designed for younger kids. Work together, solve puzzles, and feel the rush of escaping with minutes to spare.

7. Ripley's Believe It or Not! Orlando

Located on International Drive, this odditorium is a fun, quirky 2-hour experience that kids find fascinating. It's a great morning attraction paired with lunch at one of the many restaurants on I-Drive.

8. Explore ICON Park

This entertainment complex on International Drive has the Orlando Eye (a 400-foot observation wheel), SEA LIFE Aquarium, Madame Tussauds, and plenty of dining and shopping. You can easily spend a full day here without setting foot in a theme park.

9. Day Trip to Ocala National Forest

Just one hour from Orlando, Ocala offers gorgeous natural springs, horseback riding, and hiking through one of Florida's most beautiful forests. It's a perfect day trip when you want to trade the crowds for nature.

10. Resort Days (Yes, Really!)

Sometimes the best Orlando activity is simply enjoying your resort. Properties like the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress, Margaritaville Resort, and Holiday Inn Vacations Club at Orange Lake have incredible pools, water features, and activities that can fill a whole day. We always recommend building in at least one "resort day" during your trip — your kids (and your sanity) will thank you.
